Turning Regulatory Complexity Into Operational Advantage

The Regulatory Landscape Has Changed. Has Your Operating Model?

Retail and apparel brands are facing a wave of global regulation that touches every part of the value chain — sourcing, manufacturing, logistics, fulfillment, and reporting. The US Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the EU Deforestation Regulation, and a growing patchwork of national due diligence, traceability, and import compliance laws are forcing brands to shift legacy ways of working.

The brands that get ahead of it now by building the data strategy, governance, and infrastructure while the rules are still settling are the ones who turn compliance into competitive advantage instead of a fire drill. Compliance teams can tell you what the law requires. Few people can tell you how to rebuild your operations to pay you dividends long into the future — and keep shipping product on time while you do it.

That gap is where North Star lives.

Why North Star

For over a decade, I've led supply chain and operations transformation inside two of the retail industry's most operationally demanding organizations — lululemon and Mountain Equipment Company (MEC).

I didn't come to regulatory readiness through a legal or compliance background. I came to it by building the operating models, governance structures, and cross-functional teams that make transformation actually happen inside a retail organization — then applying that skill set to some of the industry's hardest regulatory challenges:

  • Built a Traceability and Supply Chain Risk function from the ground up at lululemon, creating the tools and processes that gave the business real visibility into its supply chain — not just a reporting exercise, but an operating capability.
  • Led UFLPA response strategy and operational protocols, including mock audits and cross-functional alignment, to move the organization from reactive compliance to a defensible, repeatable readiness posture.
  • Directed enterprise-scale supply chain transformation programs spanning Sourcing, Planning, Logistics, Fulfillment, Technology, and Finance — the same cross-functional muscle that regulatory transformation demands.
  • Managed multimillion-dollar program portfolios with the executive governance, risk mitigation planning, and reporting discipline needed to move a complex organization through change without losing operational performance along the way.
  • Led crisis response when unexpected supply chain disruptions required fast, high-stakes executive decision-making — the same skill set brands need when a regulatory change lands with limited runway.

In short: I've done this work from the inside, under real deadlines, with real supply chains, at real scale.

What North Star Does

Regulatory transformation isn't a policy problem. It's an execution problem. North Star helps brands close the gap between "we know what's required" and "our operations are actually built for whatever regulators decide.

Supply Chain Transformation for Regulatory Readiness: Translate emerging and evolving regulatory requirements — UFLPA, CSDDD, deforestation and traceability rules, and the broader global due diligence landscape  into practical operating models, governance structures, and cross-functional execution plans.

Traceability & Supply Chain Risk Operating Model Design: Design and implement the systems, data flows, and processes that give your organization genuine visibility into its supply chain,  not a one-time audit, but a durable operating capability.

Circularity Readiness: Prepare sourcing, product design, and supply chain operating models for the shift toward circular business models, in a way that allows the brand to improve product design year over year.

Sustainability-Driven Value Measurement & Business Case Development: Build the measurement frameworks and business cases that connect sustainability and compliance investment to operational and financial performance, so this work holds up in front of your executive team, not just your compliance team.

A Note on Timing

Regulatory frameworks in this space are moving targets — the EU recently narrowed and delayed several CSDDD requirements, and rules like UFLPA continue to evolve in enforcement practice. Brands that wait for final certainty before building capability tend to find themselves scrambling when deadlines do land. The brands that get ahead of it now by building the data strategy, governance, and infrastructure while the rules are still settling are the ones who turn compliance into competitive advantage instead of a fire drill.

That's the work North Star does.
